10 Reasons You Need to Visit a Dentist Every 6 Months

10 Reasons You Need to Visit a Dentist Every 6 Months

Dental hygiene is necessary just like any other part of the body, however, general check-ups from a dentist is still not a popular phenomenon among the general public. There is a common notion that the need to visit a dentist occurs only if you have a severe dental issue such as a toothache or you need the beautification of your teeth. People usually think that they need to see a dentist only for oral diseases and not for teeth and gum health.

10 Reasons You Need to Visit a Dentist Every 6 Months

Importance of Regular Dental Visits

A survey by The Australian Dental Association showed that 65% of people have not seen a dentist in two years while 16% don’t have the opportunity to visit a dentist. Prof. David Manton, Chair of the Australian Oral Health Committee, emphasises the importance of maintaining oral health through regular dental visits and be proactive about our dental hygiene.

There are certain factors involved pertaining to the risk of dental problems such as tooth decay, swollen gums, tooth fillings, fractured teeth and many more. The fact that high-risk patients need more frequent visits than low-risk patients is determined on the basis of potential risk factors identified by a dentist.

Reasons to have a Dental Visit

As discussed earlier, dental visits on a regular basis is an essential activity for everyone regardless of age. There are various benefits associated with dental check-ups that can keep your gums and teeth healthy and strong for a long time.

1. Pain Free Dentist Techniques
Earlier, dental treatments were considered to be frightening as the techniques were contemporary. Now a days, dentists use technologically advanced tools and techniques such as sleep dentistry, IV sedation, local anaesthetics, invisible braces, invisible aligners, dentures and many others. The simple and pain free dental processes motivate people to have regular dental check-ups. As people can recover quickly from these advanced procedures and feel less pain, therefore, they can avoid any potential dental problems in the future. They can get fast and efficient treatments with such new painless techniques.

2. Early Diagnosis of Oral Diseases
Regular visits to your dentist ensure early detection of any potential dental risk. People usually ignore their oral hygiene and they just consider brushing their teeth as the only way to keep your oral hygiene intact. This carelessness can also lead to emergency dental such as abscess, endodontic, dental implant, and severe infection. However, it is a rarely known fact that dental problems can also lead to bigger diseases such as dementia in elderly, diabetes, osteoporosis and many more. Therefore, it is important to consider a dental visit every few months as guided by your dentist to identify any risks involved.

3. Irregular Eating Habits
Nowadays our food mostly comprises of fast food, packed, tinned or inorganic food. We also seldom adopt healthy food options which can lead to various dental health problems such as tartar, swollen or bleeding gums and cavities. Simple brushing habit is not food enough to keep your teeth healthy. Hence, it is advisable to pay a visit to the dentist regularly.

4. Dental Services Available Round the Year
There are many dentists open 7 days a week so you can decide what day and time is most suitable according to your schedule. Weekends are also available with many dentists, that way you can plan a family visit when everyone is free from work or school. If you are a busy person and cannot take out the time for a dental check up then you can look for special dental offers that occur on special occasions. There are a few dentists open on public holidays like Easter, Christmas and even New Years Eve. Thus, it can be a good time for your dental check-up for when you are too busy around the year. In fact, it can be the right time to have a detailed check up since there are less patients and the doctor can examine your problems in detail.

5. Dental Beautification also needs Maintenance
Dental beautification has gained popularity in recent years as it has developed interest among the people to pay a visit to dentists. Now people look for a cosmetic dentist for various treatments such as teeth whitening, dental implants, dentures, braces, inlays and outlays etc. all such treatments allow people to enhance their self-esteem as their smile can indicate their oral hygiene. Hence, even for cosmetic dentistry, you need to pay regular dental visits which will help you maintain your oral hygiene.

6. Dental Check-up for Children
Children are most vulnerable to dental issues since they have a lot of eating disorders. They consume various types of unhygienic food such as sweets, lollies, ice cream, juices which can damage their teeth at an early age. Hence, making regular dental visits every 6 months also ensure your children to have healthy teeth. The best time to take children to a dentist is during school holidays as they are free from studies burden and are also having irregular food habits. You can always find a dentist open on school holidays and can even get discounts on such occasions.

7. Financial Benefit of Regular Check-ups
Although dental treatments are considered to be expensive, it is advisable to meet your dentist on a regular interval of 6 months. Various dental treatments cost much higher whereas a general check up would cost a fraction. Thus, if you are diagnosed with a major dental issue at some stage, it would be more expensive than paying for a regular dental visit every 6 months.

8. Finding Your Regular Dentist
It is important to have a personal dentist who has your dentistry record. It not only helps you to ease up about your dental problems, but also makes your visits less hectic. You can have a dentist that is within your area. Nowadays you can find a dentist in different suburbs at different timings.

9. Dental Hygiene for Long Term
Frequent dental check-ups ensure the protection of your teeth against potential oral diseases and can prolong the tooth life. It is especially beneficial when one reaches an old age and teeth start to weaken due to age or any other bodily diseases.

10. Sleep Recovery
Dental check-ups can also assist you in having a good night sleep. Sleep apnoea is a common issue that occurs due to pauses in breathing. Your dentist can diagnose this issue and can recommend a good specialist to cater to this problem. Otherwise, you might not be able to recognise this problem on your own.

Considering the risks involved with oral hygiene and the irregularities in our oral care and eating habits, it is vital to note that regular dental visits every 6 months is a feasible option for dental health maintenance in the long run.

Dental implants are a great way to replace missing teeth rather than having a removable partial or bridge. Dental implants are basically artificial roots (usually titanium) that are surgically placed in the area of the missing tooth, and then restored with an implant crown. Dental implants are very strong, durable, and stable and will last for many years.

Root canal treatment

It is the treatment of an inflamed or dying tooth. Inside your teeth, you have a series of nerves and arteries that hydrate your teeth, bring the cells the nutrients they need, and give your teeth the ability to detect temperature changes and monitor your chewing force. When a tooth is traumatized either by an accident, decay or an active infection, the tooth responds by becoming inflamed or infected. This makes the tooth very sensitive. HOW DOES A TOOTH BECOME INFECTED? At first, the tooth may be sensitive to cold, sometimes even heat, and as it worsens, the tooth becomes sensitive to biting down. Usually at this point it means that the inflammation and infection from the bacteria present in the mouth, has gone down through the root canals, exiting at the end of the root of the tooth. This makes the surrounding area very tender and sore to biting pressure, especially at the end of the root. Sometimes the infection is very aggressive and can cause the person’s face, or worse the neck to become swollen. This is a true dental emergency and should be treated with antibiotics and root canal therapy without delay.

HOW IS A ROOT CANAL TREATED?

The process of endodontic, root canal therapy removes the old, dying nerve, sterilizes the inside of the tooth. It is then filled with a rubbery material (gutta percha) that seals it off from the surrounding tissues. This procedure is done in the office, while you are under local anesthesia, or sedated if necessary. The procedure, itself does not hurt, it is the toothache, before treatment that you hear about that hurts.

By administering adequate anesthesia, most people are relieved of the pain they had been experiencing prior to the treatment. It is a welcomed relief. In the majority of cases, many people don’t need anything more than an Advil after treatment. All teeth that have had root canal therapy need to have what is called a composite core build-up and a crown. Statistics show that when people delay in having the crown placed, after having a root canal, they will lose their tooth within 3-5 years.

Ideally the crown should be prepared within the first 2-4 weeks after endodontic treatment, to avoid potential fracture. Our goal is to preserve your teeth for as long as possible.

Zoom Teeth Whitening

Commercial teeth whitening products found in pharmacies and salons might seem tempting, but they rarely deliver the results that patients expect. Abrasive whitening toothpaste can even damage enamel with excessive use.

We offer both In-chair and Take-home teeth whitening options. Most patients prefer to get started with our Zoom! in-chair whitening, which will brighten teeth by several shades during a one-hour appointment. They can continue the process at home with our custom Zoom! Take-home whitening trays and professional whitening gel.

Our clinical staff will measure your results using before and after shades.

Cosmetic Dental Bonding

Because tooth-coloured fillings are widely in use today, many people are aware of their aesthetic benefits. Our skilled dentists can also use composite filling material to reshape and fill in small imperfections in the teeth.

Cosmetic bonding can:

  • Fill in small chips and irregularities
  • Reshape irregular teeth
  • Fill in narrow gaps and spacing
  • Completely redesign teeth (composite veneers)

Bonding is done chair side and does not require the use of a dental lab, so it can often be completed in a single visit.

Tooth-Coloured Crowns and Veneers

If teeth have excessive wear or damage, dental crowns and veneers can restore the shape, length and appearance of the teeth. We use aesthetic, tooth-coloured restorations to cover teeth with stunning results.

Dental crowns and veneers also have oral health benefits by reducing sensitivity to damaged teeth and reshaping the bite.

Microscopic Accuracy for the Most Stunning Results

When planning cosmetic dentistry procedures, microscopic dentistry enables our dentists to use minimal preparation techniques, preserving more of the patient’s healthy tooth structure.

We ensure proper seating of veneers and dental crowns occurs more accurately when examined under the precision of the microscope.

Most Common Causes for a Toothache

Toothaches are one of the most common oral problems people face. They can make life miserable for anyone. Numerous reasons can cause a severe toothache. Generally, it’s a decayed tooth or a dental cavity. But there are many more common causes that can lead to a severe toothache. Let’s take a look at few of themMost Common causes for a toothache.

Decayed tooth

This is the most common cause of severe toothache. It’s harassing the humans for ages! During initial stages, decay shows no sign of pain or ache. But once the decay reaches “Dentin”, the inner layer of a tooth, it starts corroding it and creates a cavity. When the decay reaches the centre of a tooth, toothache becomes unbearable.

Severe pain can hamper your day to day activities. Hence, it’s essential that you visit a Dentist in your area as soon as possible to avoid any major issues.

Bleeding Gums

Periodontal diseases can result in inflamed gums leading to bleeding gums. Inflamed gums may cause pain due to gum bleeding. If you are suffering from gum bleeding, you need to visit a dentist as soon as possible. Any delay in treating bleeding gums can cause you more pain and might need surgery if left unattended.

Sensitivity

If you feel severe pain in your tooth when you drink or eat something cold or hot, you are suffering from Dental Sensitivity. When your tooth’s enamel erodes due to any reason, sensory nerves inside your tooth are exposed. These exposed nerves result in insensitivity.

Chipped or fractured tooth

Any incident involving sports activities or accident can lead to a fractured tooth. You might feel excruciating toothache if a fracture reaches the nerves of a tooth. To avoid this, you must visit a dentist immediately in such cases.

Degraded filings

Filings are used to fill cavities and grooves in a damaged or fractured tooth. As this filling degrades, cavities open up and are exposed to infection and food particles. This can lead to extreme pain and toothache. So, visit a dentist instantly if your filing is degrading or sealant is eroding to prevent from further damage.

Misaligned teeth

Misaligned teeth often cause severe tooth-ache when they press along other teeth. Resulting pressure due to misaligned teeth deforms the jaw line too causing pain in jaws and gums.

Wisdom teeth

Wisdom things are one of the leading causes of toothaches among the folks. Fully grown wisdom teeth or those below the gum line can obstruct the jaw movement resulting in severe pain. They should be removed through proper dental surgery at the earliest behest.

Improper brushing

Systematically brushing your teeth is very important to maintain oral health. Putting too much pressure on teeth while brushing can damage the gum line, resulting in weakened tooth and pain.

It’s essential to provide sufficient attention to any of the above points for healthy teeth and gums. If you are facing any dental emergencies, we are open on all seven days a week!
